I reviewed this coffee maker once before, after first receiving it, and gave it a glowing 5 stars. It is fast and coffee temp and quality are both great. I liked the thermal carafe. But within a few months I noticed a hunk of something in the glass cylinder in the center of the brewer. I assumed it was a loose piece of mineral buildup and decided I could just remove the top and shake it out. I instantly broke the cylinder, and called the manufacturer for help. I was offered a replacement (reconditioned) for $39.95, which I agreed to do. The replacement pot was a cheaper model (glass carafe) and it didn’t work, so I went back to the Moccamaster people for another replacement. The second replacement was also a dud – water gushed from the base of the machine as soon as I poured it in. The Company agreed to send us a new machine (instead of a refurbished one) at this point, still the cheaper model though.
As for the new machine, the carafe stinks. It doesn’t fit properly under the basket and it’s almost impossible to pour coffee without spilling it. The basket placement is lousy, also – it needs to be seated exactly right or coffee will overflow everywhere.
We will be going back to a commercial Bunn as soon as I can justify the expense.

For how expensive this is and the high ratings it seems to get I can not use the words that best describe it for me other than this machine is overrated.
First, I have been roasting coffee since the 90s and have used many different types of brewing devices. I am not the smartest guy but I have some experience making a good cup of coffee. And I can usually work my way around things mechanically.
While this machine gets high ratings for the temperature it reaches the main part that holds the coffee is the cheapest thing I have ever seen. And I ask why? The coffee flow control is nothing more than a manual slide lever. That includes shutting it off. Even less expensive machines stop the flow when you pull out the carafe. Another problem is that it can clog. While it does have an overflow and shouldn’t make a mess on your counter it does make a mess of the machine.
It just boggles my mind that something so expensive has as its main component something so cheap. I write this today because it did clog and really – well you know!

The Technivorm Thermo Moccamaster CDT is the improved model over the KBT-741 model. The CDT actually allows the carafe to store under the filter cone which the poorly designed 741 does NOT. The coffee produced is excellent and HOT. Also, the carafe keeps everything hot with a new clever plastic cap/dip tube. For these reasons, I really like my CDT.
However, for $300, I really expect better robust construction and design features. The brewer is essentially flimsy plastic and totally manual to an extreme. Everything just sits on top of something else and one touch causes things to fall off. Nothing is securely fitted. Additionally, there is NO automatic shut off of the heating element after brewing.
You must remember EVERY time and shut it off. There is no drip valve in the filter cone so after brewing, you must stand there waiting for the last drop to fall so that you don’t end up with a puddle of coffee after you withdraw the carage. I just keep a second cup handy to catch the inevitable last drops. Poor design! You must also position the device ‘sideways’ so that you can even see the power switch to use.
In conclusion, yes, it makes superb coffee. However, the bean counters have really wreaked hell with the production design of this brewer so that it is simply not robust and not really properly designed considering the very, very elevated price. The Europeans must love to overpay and have delicate, fragile products. Most $39. brewers in the discount store are actually more sturdy. I look forward to Technivirm upgrading/improving this otherwise excellent brewer.

The brew coffee at 200 degrees F and deliver it into a thermal carafe for your drinking pleasure. Yep, a French Press or just a Melita cone filter are cheaper, but like most Americans, I like my full pot of coffee. If that’s how you want your coffee, but you also want the coffee to taste good, then this is your coffee pot. It’s too expensive to just take my word on it, look at other online reviews, check out coffee website, and make up your own mind. I roast my coffee, and grind it carefully, and now, finally, with my Technivorm, brew it to best advantage as well.
Take a look at the annotated picture I submitted up above. The Technivorm is packed with a pair of filters and a one page manual. It’s simple and strongly built. You pour water into the marked reservoir, put filter (paper or gold) into the filter holder, add grounds, make sure the carafe is in place (safety switch to keep you from brewing onto the counter), and press the on button. If you want to, you can also control the flavor extraction by holding the water onto the grounds, or slow the drip process down. Regardless, it’s a great cup of coffee.

Researched a number of coffee makers before deciding upon the MM based on online reviews. My single positive observation is the MM brings the water to an ideal brewing temperature of 200 deg F. Allow me to continue. I purchased the Thermo Carafe model as I do not like my coffee sitting on a heated burner and would typically transfer my coffee to a separate carafe after brewing. The problem with the MM carafe is the lid does not have a filler valve mechanism that allows the carafe to fill with the lid in place. If brewing only a half pot of coffee the carafe acts like a chimney allowing the heat to escape. The result is a warm cup of coffee. I’m constantly putting my cup of coffee in the microwave to get it to an enjoyable temperature. Next problem is the shower head, for lack of a better term. Its rectangular shape does not thoroughly and uniformly saturate the ground coffee. Open the lid on the brewing cone and the periphery of the coffee grounds are still dry. The water simply funnels through the center of the grounds. The only way to get the grounds fully saturated is to close the drip valve of the cone and let the cone fill with water. The problem here is quite obvious. If brewing more than six cups of coffee one has to babysit the thing to make sure it doesn’t overflow all over your counter top. My final issue with the MM is the overall design itself. Kind of looks like something your clever, creative, tinkering grandfather cobbled together in his basement shop out of old coffee maker components , tupperware and sheet metal he had lying about. Separate lids for the cone and water reservoir that aren’t integrated with the machine, poor water delivery and distribution, cheap water pump safety switch (eventually started to stick in the on position). At this price there are better coffee brewing systems available.
